In Gurugram, candidates are concentrating on civic matters and poor waste management.

Concerns among city residents revolve around poorly maintained roads, waterlogging during the monsoon, and ongoing sewer overflow issues. The Bandhwari landfill stands out as a representation of administrative shortcomings, with claims of mismanagement and a lack of clarity regarding the use of funds designated for waste management.

As the Haryana assembly elections approach, candidates from various political parties are ramping up their campaigns, emphasizing urgent civic matters such as damaged roads, inadequate waste management, and sanitation challenges in Gurugram.

The recent suspension of several municipal officials for their failure to address road repairs has brought civic infrastructure to the forefront of election discussions.

Congress candidates are seizing this moment to hold the BJP-led government accountable, alleging negligence and corruption. Vardhan Yadav, the Congress candidate for the Badshahpur constituency, has pointed out these civic shortcomings in his campaign, criticizing the current administration for squandering taxpayer money without achieving noticeable improvements.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) reported an income of ₹250 crore from property tax for the 2023-24 fiscal year, falling short of its ₹500 crore target by 50%.

Where has the money gone? Why is there a lack of progress in the city despite regular property tax payments? Yadav expressed concern that the city, once known for its corporate offices and skyscrapers, is now infamous for inadequate sanitation and chaotic traffic.

He highlighted the city’s inability to handle construction and demolition waste, which has become a symbol of Gurugram’s deteriorating infrastructure. “The only way forward is change, and we will bring that change,” he assured.

Yadav’s campaign aims to create top-notch roads and maintain cleanliness across the city. “If I am elected, I will revamp the city with the community’s backing. There will be zero tolerance for corruption, and officials who do not perform will be held responsible,” he vowed.

On the other hand, Mohit Grover, the Congress candidate for the Gurgaon constituency, has also criticized the current government’s shortcomings.

He pointed to scandals involving the mishandling of funds intended for crucial infrastructure projects, such as road repairs and water management systems. “The city has turned into a center of corruption, and these scandals have exacerbated civic issues,” Grover stated, emphasizing that vital projects remain underfunded while residents continue to face difficulties.

In response to these criticisms, BJP leaders defend their record by highlighting their development efforts. Rao Narbir Singh remarked, “Under the BJP administration, we have launched significant development projects, including the resurfacing of roads throughout Gurugram.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has addressed all potholes that were created during the monsoon. We have made sure that no resident has to deal with dangerous road conditions, and this is just the start of our commitment to enhancing civic infrastructure.” He added, “Alongside road repairs, we have issued tenders for waste management and construction debris, and new agencies have been appointed for sanitation and door-to-door waste collection. We are committed to making Gurugram a cleaner and more efficient city.”

Mukesh Sharma expressed similar views, stating, “Our administration is committed to addressing the urgent challenges our residents face. We recognize the frustrations surrounding waste management, which is why we have improved our processes for sanitation services. By partnering with new agencies, we are boosting efficiency and ensuring effective waste management. Our goal is to provide a smooth experience for our citizens.”

As the pressure increases, the administration has had to respond. Several municipal officials have been suspended due to negligence, especially in areas concerning road repairs and waste management. MCG Commissioner Narhari Singh Bangar has assured the public that he is personally visiting each ward to tackle these issues and facilitate prompt solutions.
