Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation has caused quite a stir. The former Delhi chief minister is set to meet with his ex-deputy, Manish Sisodia, in Delhi’s Civil Lines today. They are expected to discuss potential replacements for Kejriwal as the Delhi CM. The meeting will take place at Kejriwal’s official residence.
“Kejriwal and Sisodia will be meeting today. This will be the first meeting after the decision by them. The meeting is also likely to see a discussion over the next chief minister,” the AAP leader said, per PTI.
The meeting will be held at the official house of Arvind Kejriwal at Delhi’s Civil Lines.
Kejriwal announced his resignation as the CM, stating that he would not return to his position until winning the assembly polls. He emphasized the importance of public perception of his honesty and integrity. Following this unexpected development, there’s speculation about who will succeed Kejriwal.
Names such as his wife Sunita and Delhi ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai are being mentioned as possible replacements.
Kejriwal said he would not sit in the chair until the people of Delhi gave him a “certificate of honesty”.
“I am going to resign after two days and ask people whether I am honest. I want to appeal to the public, if you think Kejriwal is honest, vote for me. If you think Kejriwal is guilty, do not vote for me. Every vote of yours will be a certificate of my honesty,” he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has labeled Kejriwal’s resignation as a “drama” and “confession of crime”.
They attributed his exit to the Supreme Court’s restrictions on his access to the CM’s Office. Despite the political upheaval, the focus is also on the upcoming Delhi Assembly term, which is set to expire in 2025. Kejriwal is advocating for an earlier election date, while the last assembly election in Delhi was held on February 8, 2020. AAP secured the majority with 62 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 8 seats in the 70-member assembly.
