Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been embroiled in a financial misconduct case and is presently in judicial custody. Allegations of financial irregularities have surfaced against Sandip Ghosh, who previously served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This is not the first time he has been associated with corruption charges.
Prior to his tenure as principal, Sandip Ghosh faced accusations of misusing funds in 2020, allegedly for unauthorized travel, as reported by The Times of India. Furthermore, while being under investigation by the enforcement directorate and in judicial custody, Ghosh underwent scrutiny by the state health department.
Whistleblowers raised concerns about his involvement in questionable hospital purchases, mistreatment of colleagues, accumulation of personal assets, and alleged misuse of funds for personal trips. Although the 2020 inquiry yielded inconclusive results, complaints were lodged against Ghosh with the state vigilance department. Despite facing discontinued probes and dropped charges, Ghosh was subsequently promoted to the position of principal at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to a report by The Times of India, the initial complaint against Ghosh, filed in February 2020, implicated him in an unauthorized trip to Dubai, with allegations that hospital suppliers funded his travel. Additionally, he was accused of flouting government regulations on hospital procurement for personal financial gain, alongside Ma Tara and Biplab Singha, both of whom have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Ghosh has denied these allegations, providing evidence from his passport indicating no visit to Dubai. During this period, Ghosh, then the vice-principal and superintendent at Calcutta National Medical College, was accused of operating a private practice, which is unlawful for high-ranking officials.
A request for an impartial investigation was made to the principal of Calcutta National Medical College, but he claimed it would be challenging to provide an unbiased opinion due to his prior professional interaction with Ghosh. The investigation report did not yield substantial findings regarding the allegations against Sandip Ghosh. Regarding Ghosh’s private practice, the report stated that it was permissible since he did not avail himself of his non-practicing allowance.
